Overview

George Orwell's 1984 is one of the most influential dystopian novels ever written. In Luk Perceval's powerful stage adaptation, Winston Smith and Julia struggle to preserve love, memory, and truth in a society ruled by surveillance, propaganda, and absolute political control. The production transforms Orwell's classic into an intense psychological drama about freedom, resistance, and the fragility of human identity.

In the totalitarian state of Oceania, every citizen lives under the constant surveillance of Big Brother. History is rewritten daily, language is manipulated, and independent thought has become the greatest crime of all.

Winston Smith secretly questions the Party's version of reality. When he falls in love with Julia, their relationship becomes an act of rebellion against a regime determined to eliminate individuality. Their hope for freedom is ultimately confronted by torture, psychological manipulation, and systematic destruction of personal identity.

Director Luk Perceval adapts Orwell's novel as an intimate psychological exploration of fear, truth, and resistance. Rather than focusing solely on political spectacle, the production examines how totalitarianism invades the human mind and destroys the ability to distinguish reality from ideology. Yet beneath the darkness remains Orwell's belief that the human desire for truth can never be completely extinguished.

The Berliner Ensemble is one of the most prestigious and influential dramatic theatres in Europe. Founded in 1949 by legendary playwright and director Bertolt Brecht together with actress Helene Weigel, the theatre has played a defining role in the development of modern theatre and remains closely associated with Brecht's concept of Epic Theatre.

Since 1954, the company has been based in the historic Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, a magnificent Neo-Baroque theatre in central Berlin. Today, the Berliner Ensemble operates three performance venues—the Großes Haus, Neues Haus, and Werkraum—presenting a diverse repertoire ranging from Bertolt Brecht's masterpieces and Shakespearean classics to contemporary works by leading international playwrights.

Under the artistic direction of Oliver Reese, the theatre continues its tradition of combining classical drama with socially relevant contemporary productions.
