Overview

Max Hopp brings Carl Zuckmayer's celebrated classic to life in a virtuoso solo performance with live music by Doris Decker. Based on the true story of Wilhelm Voigt, The Captain of Köpenick is a witty and deeply moving satire about bureaucracy, blind obedience, identity, and the absurdity of authority.

On 16 October 1906, the unemployed shoemaker Wilhelm Voigt disguised himself as a Prussian captain, gathered a group of obedient soldiers, and occupied Köpenick Town Hall. His extraordinary deception became one of Germany's most famous true stories and inspired Carl Zuckmayer's classic play.

In this solo adaptation, actor Max Hopp performs all the characters himself—from Wilhelm Voigt and the tailor Wabschke to Mayor Obermüller and numerous soldiers, officials, and citizens. Accompanied by live music from Doris Decker, the production transforms the famous satire into an energetic theatrical event that combines humour with a powerful critique of bureaucracy, militarism, and social exclusion.

Written in 1931, Zuckmayer's play also served as a political statement against authoritarianism and blind obedience. Today it remains one of the greatest classics of German theatre.
