Overview

A thought-provoking theatrical exploration of identity, memory, and the stories people invent about themselves. Through shifting narratives and imagined lives, the play asks whether our identities are defined by truth or by the roles we choose to perform.

Adapted from Max Frisch's celebrated novel, My Name Be Gantenbein is an imaginative and philosophical drama that blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction. The central character experiments with different identities and life stories, trying on personalities as though they were costumes. Among these imagined selves is Theo Gantenbein, a man who pretends to be blind, revealing how perception, deception, and self-invention shape human relationships.

Rather than presenting a single linear narrative, the play unfolds as a series of interconnected possibilities, where memories, fantasies, and alternative versions of the same events overlap. Rich in wit, psychological insight, and theatrical invention, My Name Be Gantenbein invites audiences to question the nature of truth, identity, love, and the stories we tell ourselves in order to make sense of our lives.

Founded in 1949 by Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel, the Berliner Ensemble is one of Germany's most celebrated theatres and an international symbol of dramatic excellence. Located in the historic Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in the heart of Berlin, it is renowned for its outstanding productions of Brecht's plays, world classics, and contemporary drama. Combining a rich artistic tradition with innovative directing and one of Germany's finest acting ensembles, the Berliner Ensemble remains one of Europe's leading theatre institutions.

The Berliner Ensemble is one of the most prestigious and influential dramatic theatres in Europe. Founded in 1949 by legendary playwright and director Bertolt Brecht together with actress Helene Weigel, the theatre has played a defining role in the development of modern theatre and remains closely associated with Brecht's concept of Epic Theatre.

Since 1954, the company has been based in the historic Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, a magnificent Neo-Baroque theatre in central Berlin. Today, the Berliner Ensemble operates three performance venues—the Großes Haus, Neues Haus, and Werkraum—presenting a diverse repertoire ranging from Bertolt Brecht's masterpieces and Shakespearean classics to contemporary works by leading international playwrights.

Under the artistic direction of Oliver Reese, the theatre continues its tradition of combining classical drama with socially relevant contemporary productions. Its resident ensemble of acclaimed actors collaborates with some of Europe's most distinguished directors, creating productions known for their artistic excellence, intellectual depth, and innovative stagecraft.

Recognized as one of Germany's foremost cultural institutions, the Berliner Ensemble attracts audiences from around the world and regularly presents performances with English surtitles for international visitors. It remains a vibrant centre for theatrical innovation while preserving one of the richest dramatic legacies in modern theatre history.
