Overview

Let John Barry's music, played by the City Light Symphony Orchestra, transport you to the vastness of the West and experience the masterpiece "Dances With Wolves" in new splendor.

With "Dances with Wolves," Kevin Costner created a masterpiece in 1990 that won seven Oscars – including Best Picture and Best Original Score. The live world premiere in March 2025 at the KKL Luzern was a breathtaking concert event, celebrated with a standing ovation by over 4,000 attendees. Experience this Western epic in all its majestic glory live with the City Light Symphony Orchestra in the KKL concert hall!

Thirty-five years ago, Kevin Costner made film history with "Dances with Wolves." No Hollywood studio believed in the success of this Western drama about the decline of the Wild West, but Costner was undeterred. He financed the project himself, and when he couldn't find a director, he simply took the reins himself, delivering his impressive directorial debut with "Dances with Wolves." The result was a surprise box office hit, and with its breathtakingly beautiful visuals, sensitive storytelling, meticulous historical and cultural accuracy, and John Barry's dreamlike score, the three-hour epic "Dances with Wolves" captivated millions of moviegoers, garnered widespread critical acclaim, and received numerous awards.

The story begins in 1863 in a field hospital near a battlefield in Tennessee. The Civil War is raging, and among its countless wounded is Union Lieutenant John Dunbar (Kevin Costner). He is scheduled to have his leg amputated, but he sneaks out of the hospital, intending instead to meet his certain death on the battlefield.

However, through a twist of fate, Dunbar helps the Union forces achieve victory and is hailed as a hero. Under these circumstances, he receives priority medical treatment, which saves his leg. Furthermore, he gets to choose his next posting, and so John Dunbar decides on Fort Sedgewick, an outpost in the frontier and Native American territory. Upon arriving there, he enters an unfamiliar world. In the solitude, he embarks on extensive forays, soon realizing that a wolf is watching him intently. And he encounters the Sioux and Pawnee Indians.

Composer John Barry read the script and immediately agreed to direct. Barry: "The war-wounded John Dunbar experiences the beauty of nature and the dignity of the Sioux Indians in the frontier. This is what my music portrays." Barry's distinctly thematic film score overwhelms with grand symphonic grandeur and heart-wrenching intimacy at the same time. He masterfully captures both heroism and a melancholic lament for the Wild West. "Dances With Wolves" is John Barry's magnum opus, and he deservedly won his fifth Oscar for it.
