Overview

The Lucerne Symphony Orchestra's piano festival, initially titled "Piano symphonique," began with two symphonic concerts and chamber music. In recent years, solo recitals have increasingly taken center stage.

This year, the symphonic aspect is further emphasized with an additional, third concert by the orchestra. For the first time, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra will perform the opening concert. "Piano symphonique" here has a double meaning: The orchestra will perform Franz Liszt's Mephisto Waltz, a showcase of virtuosic piano literature in its orchestral arrangement, and will accompany pianist Helene Grimaud in Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major. The concept of combining different ensembles in one evening, presented in "two acts," is already realized in the opening concert. In the first act of this French-themed evening, Grimaud immerses herself in the mysteriously sublime "Cathedrale engloutie" of Debussy and performs Ravel's violin sonatas with violinist Renaud Capuçon. These pieces, written to mark the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth, outline Ravel's development in brief. With his first sonata, of which Ravel only completed one movement, he recommended himself for composition lessons with Gabriel Fauré. In the late second sonata, he flirts with jazz in the blues of the second movement, a style that also resonates brightly in the piano concerto.
