Overview

The life and legacy of Paulo Gustavo (1978–2021) will reach the stage in 2026 with “Meu Filho é um Musical” (My Son is a Musical) , a super production conceived by Déa Lúcia and Ju Amaral in homage to one of the country's greatest artists.

The show, presented by the Ministry of Culture and BB Seguros, with sponsorship from BNY and Robert Half , premieres on May 28, 2026 at the Teatro Multiplan in Rio de Janeiro, with tickets available from November 15th through the Sympla website and at the theater's box office . Directed by Ju Amaral and João Fonseca , and with a script by Fil Braz , Paulo Gustavo's longtime partner in theater, film, and television, the production transforms his personal and professional story into an exciting, original, and large-scale musical—a wish the artist expressed during his lifetime and which is now realized through the efforts of his family and Touché Entretenimento , one of the largest production companies in the country.

The premiere date carries symbolic significance: it marks exactly 20 years since Paulo Gustavo presented "Minha Mãe é Uma Peça" to the world, a monologue that spawned the franchise that immortalized Dona Hermínia, a character inspired by Déa Lúcia and responsible for transforming the actor into a national phenomenon. Now, two decades later, it is Déa who takes the stage to reciprocate the tribute her son paid her in life, by creating the show "O Filho da Mãe" in 2019, when the two shared the spotlight in performances marked by humor, affection, and music. In "Meu Filho é um Musical," Déa may participate in some sessions, according to her professional commitments; in the performances where she is not present, she will be portrayed by Stella Maria Rodrigues , an actress and singer who was part of the cast of " Minha Mãe é Uma Peça 3" and was specially invited to assume this symbolic role.

On stage, the musical will follow Paulo's journey from his childhood in Niterói, when he already imitated his mother and aunts, to becoming one of the most popular and influential names in Brazilian humor. The narrative revisits his first steps in theater, his national recognition, the creation of characters that became classics, and the historical achievements that marked his career, such as the record-breaking 11 million viewers of * Minha Mãe é Uma Peça 3* , the highest-grossing film in the history of Brazilian cinema. With a soundtrack that mixes songs present in the artist's life—including international hits by Beyoncé, his favorite singer—and original songs composed for the production, the staging seeks to reflect his irreverence, his generosity, and the cultural impact he left behind.

Touché Entretenimento , led by Renata Borges , is producing its first 100% Brazilian musical, following a trajectory marked by highly successful productions such as Beetlejuice , Mrs. Doubtfire , Dear Evan Hansen , SpongeBob SquarePants , Something Rotten , Peter Pan – The Musical , and Cinderella – The Broadway Musical . For Renata, encountering this story was inevitable. “Talking about Paulo Gustavo is talking about a force of nature. He didn't come from nothing—he came from everything: from the immense love of Dona Déa, from his life partnership with Ju, from a rare courage and a brilliance that all of Brazil recognizes. Producing this show is an honor and a journey, because each scene carries the living memory of an artist who not only made people laugh, but made them feel. Paulo Gustavo and Dona Déa are an affective treasure of Brazil ,” she affirms.

Déa Lúcia reinforces the emotional nature of the project by celebrating the realization of her son's dream: “My son had a rare talent and heart. Everything he did was with great love and dedication. Now Juju and I will pay him all the tributes and fulfill one of his greatest dreams: a grand Broadway show.” Ju Amaral highlights the commitment to artistic quality: “The stage was my brother's second home. He thought big, wanted everything perfect, and had enormous respect for the audience. That's how we want to honor him: with a show worthy of everything he was and represented.”

Present in the creative process as a collaborator, anthropologist and researcher Beatriz Coelho — a personal friend, former press officer for Paulo and current press officer for Déa — reinforces the perspective on the artist behind the icon: “Paulo Gustavo wasn't afraid to think big. He invented his career and imprinted his mark on the Brazilian art scene with boldness, humor, and humanity. His story is intimate, Brazilian, and universal.”
